Before your arrival in Bohol, and your week (or more…) of paradise, you will probably be arriving at the International Airport in Manila. Why not spend a couple of days experiencing life in this thriving capital city.
Here are some personal recommendations we have whilst visiting Manila:
- Stay at the Mabini Mansion Hotel a well run, clean, friendly hotel within walking distance of many sites, attractions, restaurants and bars.
- Visit Intramuros, the 16th century Spanish built walled district of Manila - full of history and culture... and of course a Starbucks!
- Within Intramuros is Fort Santiago - formally a palace, trade post and fortress for the Spanish government - it's now a museum and national landmark. José Rizal, the country's national hero, was imprisoned here before his execution in 1896.
- A great way to spend a morning or afternoon is relaxing with a picnic in Rizal Park, a park dedicated to José Rizal. As well as the national monument to José Rizal there is also Chinese and Japanese Gardens, the Department of Tourism's main office, the National Museum of the Filipino People, The National Library of the Philippines, the Orchidarium and Butterfly Pavilion, the Planetarium, the monument of the Philippines's first hero, Lapu-Lapu, a fountain area, a children's lagoon, a chess plaza, a light and sound presentation on the last days of Jose Rizal, and the Quirino Grandstand.
- At least one evening should be spent walking along Bay Walk - a 2 km promenade on Roxas Boulevard. Here you will find cafes, restaurants, music, entertainment, and a glorious Manila sunset!
- Want to get away from Manila for a few hours? Ask the very helpful staff at the Mabini Mansion Hotel to organise a taxi for the day and visit Tagaytay. Tagaytay City lies on top of the Tagaytay Ridge, which is 640 meters above sea level. The ridge provides a spectacular view of Taal Lake and Taal Volcano.
- If you like shopping then you won't want to pass up the opportunity to visit the Mall of Asia - one of the largest malls in the world! Also in nearby Quezon City is SM City North EDSA, a mall with over 900 shops in 5 buildings!
Remember, these are just some of the things we recommend. Whatever you do, or wherever you visit we hope you have a memorable stay in the Philippines!
